Tranexamic Acid – A New Ingredient in SkinCare

Tranexamic acid (TXA for short) becomes a new ingredient in skincare in recent years.

What is Tranexamic Acid?

tranexamic acid was originally used to reduce blood loss in patients experiencing menorrhagia and during open-heart surgery.  In 1979, physicians accidentally began noticing that patients who had been treated with tranexamic acid were seeing visible improvement in skin discoloration.” Plus, unlike some acids, which play nicer alone, it pairs beautifully with other brightening and skin-repairing saviors like vitamin C and your favorite SPF.

How is the pigmentation caused?

Before we learn how the tranexamic acid works on our skin, we have to understand how the pigmentation comes on our skin first.

Everyday elements—including UV exposure, prescription drugs, and some professional treatments—can trigger the skin discoloration process by activating inflammatory mediators within the skin, warns.  This results in a chain reaction that causes skin to produce melanin, the naturally occurring pigment that gives skin its color. While the purpose of melanin is protective, when produced in excess, it can form deposits in the skin that manifest as dark patches, isolated spots, or an overall darker facial appearance.

How does tranexamic acid work on our skin?

When tranexamic acid is slathered on our skin, then it can inhibit UV-induced melanin synthesis by blocking the interaction between skin cells and melanin-producing cells.

It interferes with the interaction of pigment-producing melanin-producing cells and regular skin cells

  • It could decrease blood vessels in affected skin
  • Tranexamic acid also decreases inflammatory mediators that stimulate pigment production after UV exposure
  • It decreases the number of mast cells which release inflammatory mediators
  • it could also potentially slow down the production of melanin by tyrosinase as a competitive antagonist.

Luckily, tranexamic acid plays well with other ingredients in the process. like retinol & vitamin C. . For optimal results, it is suggested that working tranexamic acid skincare product into your morning and night skin-care routines. Tranexamic Acid topical cream is applied after toner but before moisturizer.  But also be sure to layer on sunscreen last in the morning.  Tranexamic acid is particularly working well to treat melasma which is .more likely to happen in people of Asian, African, and Hispanic descent.   Fortune Forte provides tranexamic acid skincare products.
