Wattamolla – A Secluded Gem Near Us

Recently I have just found an absolutely wonderful place to get away for everyone, especially someone with a family. That is Wattamolla Beach which is only 50 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD.

“Wattamolla” is derived from an Aboriginal term meaning “place near running water.”

Matthew Flinders, an English navigator and geographer, discovered the location in 1796 when he and his crew were forced to seek shelter in the lagoon’s calm waters owing to bad weather.

Going around Wattamolla, there are not only a beach and lagoon, but also Wattamolla falls and lookout points you can explore.

Things to do in Wattamolla

The variety of Wattamolla may suit different people’s interests. You can swim in the water in pool or sea, or go climbing the hill or rocks to explore a lot of lookouts and amazing spots.

The lagoon’s water is so tranquil and gorgeous that it’s ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and even kayaking. You can either swim across the lagoon or circumnavigate it by taking the ocean facing stretch of Wattamolla Beach.

The short walking road towards the Wattamolla lookout, officially called as the Providential Point Lookout, is the most obvious path to hike when in Wattamolla. The track is approximately 600 metres one way from the picnic spot, and it is largely flat and easy to follow.

The walking track to Wattamolla Dam, also known as Wattamolla Creek Dam, is about 800 metres to the north and is a great little hike.   It’s a short and simple bushwalk that follows Wattamolla Creek to a wonderful water hole with great forest views, perfect for a brief swim.

The Wattamolla picnic area is quite spacious and well-distributed, with a few electric BBQs and a number of covered and uncovered tables spread out across a huge open field.
